Week 1: Winner Announced

Hello Challengers!

We had a great first week of Teen Summer Challenge. In this post, we will tell you last week’s winner and give you a roundup of some of our favorite submissions to the Welcome Video Challenge.

We loved watching your welcome videos, and it was hard to choose a winner! You are all awesome.

Nevertheless, this week’s winner is… drum roll please… @zdog554

CONGRATS!! What we liked about this video was that @zdog554 made the video with a friend after hearing about Teen Summer Challenge at the Boys & Girls Club and that they seemed excited about the title we are giving away: an Advanced Reader’s Copy of Hello, Sunshine by Leila Howland.

Thumb Wars Challenge

To build a better world, you need to put your ideas into action! Campaigns like the ones on DoSomething.org are a great way to get started.

Thumb Wars is a Do Something campaign to stop texting and driving. Make two thumb socks: one to keep and one to give to your friend. If you wear the thumb socks while driving, you can’t text!

In this week’s Thumb Wars video challenge, we challenge you to share a thumb sock with a friend to remind them not to text and drive. Check it out!

Destaque Un Mundo Mejor

Calling all aspiring film-makers!

We’re very excited to announce a free opportunity to make movies at the Tacoma Public Library and Lakewood Pierce County Library this summer!

Bring a Better World Into Focus / Destaque Un Mundo Mejor is a free four-week intensive film camp for Pierce County youth ages 12-18 who show an interest in film-making and social issues. By the end of the program, you will have created a short film that addresses social issues important to you and your community.

Destaque un Mundo Mejor

This program series is open to all, but we highly encourage Spanish-speaking/Latino students to sign up! Our instructors are bilingual and the completed films will be submitted to the Latin Arts Festival. All film equipment is provided. We will also provide free bus tickets to and from each day’s program.

Camp Code: Game Lab

On June 22nd and 23rd from 1-4 pm at the Bethel Learning Center, learn how old-fashioned games and video games are made of the same basic stuff. Day One: Learn game design basics. Day Two: Program your own game to play online. You must come both days. Registration is required.

YouTube Tutorial

Part of this year’s Teen Summer Challenge revolves around making YouTube videos. Don’t know where to start? We’ve made this handy dandy tutorial.

Get an account

YouTube sign-in is tied to a Google account. Do you have a gmail.com email? Great! You already have a Google account. All you need to do is click on the ‘sign in’ button and use your email account to sign in.

No gmail? You will need to create a google account

Subscribe to our channel

Once you have your account, find the Pierce County Library’s Teen Summer Challenge channel and subscribe by clicking the subscribe button.

Create your own channel

Before you start uploading your own videos, it’s a good idea to create your own channel. Click the three lines in the top left corner for a drop down menu, and click on ‘My channel’.

You will be prompted to create a channel.

Now you can edit the channel description and start uploading videos!

Make videos

Do you have a smartphone? Great! Download the YouTube app, login, and record videos by clicking on the video camera icon.

You don’t? The library has a solution for you. The following branches have Chromebooks for in-library check out:

  • South Hill
  • Sumner
  • Tillicum
  • Key Center
  • Parkland/Spanaway

With our Chromebooks you can record and upload video by going to clipchamp.com.  You will sign in with your Google account.

From clipchamp, you can share directly to YouTube.

This year’s theme is “Build a Better World.” Our challenges are designed to build a better… library, community, and world! Gain knowledge, practice empathy, and take action! This summer, build a better YOU.
