Water is Life: Standing Rock

7 Points

Standing Rock is a Sioux Tribe that lives on the Standing Rock Reservation in South Dakota.

Recently, the tribe and their reservation has been in the news because they are protesting the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). The DAPL is an underground oil pipeline that is currently under construction near the reservation.

Many concerns about water contamination and government violation of native sovereignty have led to marches, protests, and a camp called Oceti Sakowin Camp at a pipeline construction site near Standing Rock.

Find someone’s first-hand narrative account of their experience protesting at Oceti Sakowin Camp. To earn points, share the link here and tell us what you learned. What surprised you?
